Fiona E Greaves LLB(Hons)

Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner
A graduate in law, Fiona specialised in Health and Safety Legislation, carrying out research into the effectiveness of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Her twelve years as a safety professional began with the position of Safety Officer for British Rail, Western Region, later becoming the Professional Head of Safety for Great Western Trains Company.

During this time she has gathered a broad range of safety advisory experience within a variety of organistions, allowing her to provide expert support on all areas of Health and Safety. In particular she has an in depth experience in the writing of safety cases and developing management systems.


With clear communication skills and thorough knowledge of safety law, Fiona has the ability to simpley and clearly explain Health and Safety responsibilities to anyone, whether senior manager or floor staff - making it easy to understand and apply. As well as training on Health and Safety Law Fiona also specialises in training sessions covering musculaskeletal disorders, rishk assessment, accident investigation and use of hazardous substances.


Fiona is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, a member of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition and a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Ben is a specialist in Rail Safety, having worked within rail industry for 30 years. He began his safety career with the British Railways Board as the Safety Engineer for the 9,000 strong Signalling and telecommunications Department, and went on to play a significant role in the validation arrangements necessary to ensure a safe transition from British Rail to the private sector.

He later specialised in audit and assurance activities, and managed a team of 35 at Railway Safety, latterly the Rail Safety and Standards Boarda (RSSB), auditing compliance with Railway Safety Case commitments, managing the Vehicle Acceptance Body process and auditing Railway Group standards. This role involved significant liason at managing director level throughout the British rail industry.

Ben's specialist experience within the rail industry lead to him gaining a distinction in his recently completed Masters Degree (MSc), for which his final dissertation was on the topic of "The interpretation of reasonable practicability as applied on Britain's railways".

Since leaving RSSB Ben has used his experience and expertise in the field of Health and Safety to provide consultancy in many industries, on topics including risk assessment, project management, technical review and training. His excellent communication skills and positive, pragmatic attitude to Health and Safety enable him to offer consultancy which helps to make Health and Safety easy.

Ben is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and a Member of the Institute of Railway Signal Engineers. In addition, prior to the introduction of chartered status for health and safety practitioners he was a Registered Safety Practitioner. He is currently engaged as a technical expert for UKAS in the pilot schemes for accreditation of certification bodies to deliver OHSAS18001 accreditation.

Alan G M Haynes CEng MICE CMIOSH
Alan joined Steele Safety Ltd in 2006. He joined the Railways straight from school in 1970 as a Civil Engineering Trainee and graduated in 1975. After working in civil engineering for more than 14 years, Alan transferred to project management and then later on into safety. He is presently engaged as Project Manager, Safety for Stagecoach South West Trains Major Projects and where he was heavily involved in the introduction of the new train fleet. His previous experience includes being Safety and Assurance Manager for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
